Cali Colombia

After a 21hr flight, Michael and I arrived in Cali - Colombia, with no luggage and just the clothes on our back and a spare pair of underwear (Tip: always fly with spare clothes). The weather is beautiful, nice and hot and sunny (just like home - Brisbane). We haven't seen the track yet, but will go today.

CadoMotus wins Hoogeveen World on Wheels but is then disqualified.

For full report go to CadoMotus blogspot. The ladies race was a complete mess, with both the A Men and Ladies A starting 1min apart. With no video footage, no report from the judges and nothing to go on but Elma de Vries' word, Angeline Thomas was disqualified and relegated to 16th place for 'apparently' crossing into the path of Elma de Vries and obstructing her from sprinting. CadoMotus tried to protest when the head official said it was not allowed and then began announcing the results over the speaker.

Engadin World Inline Cup and CadoMotus 1,2,3 in Nijkerk World on Wheels

Angeline Thomas, Jannitta Spigt and new team-member Mariska Huisman left at 630am Friday morning for the long drive to St.Moritz/Engadin for the World Inline Cup stage on Saturday. While they raced the 42-kilometer point-to-point marathon known as the fastest in the World, Hilde Goovaerts, Bianca Roosenboom and Margo van de Merwe represented CadoMotus in the fast Nijkerk stage of the Netherlands World on Wheels.

Despite a protest lodged by one of the ladies teams against Giovanna Turchiarelli concerning her line during the final sprint, the finishing order has been upheld. Thomas' 8th follows her 4th position at last week's Sursee stage.

Meanwhile back in The Netherlands at the Nijkerk World on Wheels, Bianca Roosenboom, Hilde Goovaerts and Margo Van de Merwe made a clean, sweep taking out 1st ,2nd and 3rd.

The rain that had covered most of the Netherlands during the day held off for the Mens A event in Nijkerk, despite it "raining attacks" throughout the the race. As the start went off during the podium ceremony for the Ladies, it did so without Unive/Stouwdam skaters Michael Byrne (AUS) and Frank Fiers (BEL), a 2-man attack was away by the time the first lap was completed and the 2 skaters rejoined the race.

Despite frequent attacks, many initiated by National Points and Elimination Champion Ingmar Berga, the Nijkerk course meant the pack maintained a high rolling speed and few attacks troubled the bunch - except one 3-man break that gained 300-meters on the group and remained away for 5+ laps before the 3 skaters broke apart.Teams positioned themselves for a field sprint in the final laps, and despite the Unive Team making an early surge to the front on the bell, it was Sjoerd Huisman who jumped Koen Verweij and Michael Byrne to take another sprint victory over Byrne and Roy Boeve. The third criterium in a row with the same 1,2,3 result, with the classment's 3 leaders taking the major placings.

CadoMotus 4th in Sursee World Inline Cup. Mantia Wins again

This weekend got underway with the 7th stage of the World Inline Cup in Sursee Switzerland. The course was 21km a lap, smooth, slightly windy, and had a few hills, but nothing like the WIC Weinfelden stage. The CadoMotus ladies team, along with Diederik Hol (Manager/Director of CadoMotus) Mick Byrne and Desly Hill (Coach), left Holland Friday morning to arrive around 6pm in Sursee. The race wasn’t until 5.40pm the next day, which gave us plenty of time to rest after the long drive.

Bianca and me at the start line

The start of both the Mens and Ladies race was neutralized for the first 2km, in order for the public to get a good look at the skaters as they past by. During the race, attacks were made by Nicole Begg (NZ - Ssang Yong), Tamara Llorens (ARG - Sportvital RB) and sometimes the Alessi girls. It was quite a hard course to break away on, as the speed of the group was moving fast, and anyone that broke away off the front, was skating into the wind. As we came through the finish with one lap to go, Sportvital’s skater Tamara Llorens attacked off the front through the 500mts of the tight snaked section, with Nicole Begg and me chasing. As we made our way back on to the open road, the group soon caught.

Ladies Field sprint- Top Right picture. From Left - Laura Lardani, Sandra Gomez, Giovanna Turchiarelli, Nicole Begg, Bianca Roosenboom (behind Nicole), Angeline Thomas in middle of road, Nadine Gloor, Jana Gegner, Natalia Artero, Catherine Penan.

The group stayed together until the end, with all the teams organizing themselves for the finish from as early as 10km out. The Alessi team led, followed by Ssang Yong, Atheticum, World Inline Centre, CadoMotus and so on. As we made our way down the final hill, through the last tight right hand turn and towards a traffic island, the group split into two. I followed 6 other girls to the right of the road with my team on my wheel, where we then came over the top of a roundabout. The Alessi train began wasting their lead out girls and as we came through the last slight left hand turn there was 150mt to the finish. I somehow was now on the left hand side of the road, and weaving in and out of girls who had finished their lead. The two Alessi girls Giovanna Turchiarelli (ITA) and Sandra Gomez (ESP) both started sprinting from the right of the road, with Natalia Artero (ARG - World Inline Centre), Nicole Begg and me on the left. It was a close finish with Sandra Gomez taking the victory, her team mate Giovanna Turchiarelli for 2nd, a close lunge for Nicole Begg in 3rd and myself 4th.

Sandra Gomez 1st, Giovanna Turchiarelli 2nd, Nicole Begg 3rd, Angeline Thomas 4th Natalia Artero 5th.

Our team was so happy to get another podium (5 on the podium for the Ladies and 7 for the men), with Hilde Goovaerts placing 4th in Rennes a few weeks before. Bianca Roosenboom had a great race also placing 12th in the finish after doing a lot of work early in the race.

Leimuiden Open Competition

On Tuesday night was the Leimuiden Criterion race, held on a 700mt smooth asphalt course. This is one of the nicest criterion races of the year, with a nice party after. After a long weekend of racing, and doing strength training that morning, racing again two days later was quite hard. The ladies, C grade Men and Veteran Men were on the one podium, with only the prize money being separate for the ladies. Hilde and I were the only ones from CadoMotus to race as Jannitta and Bianca had National training.

Our race got off to a fast start, with a break away of me and two other C Men going after 3 laps. It was soon caught, with more attacks going off the front. As I returned to the group, my shins blew up and all I could do was sit in the group, try and recover and wait for the end sprint. There was still 20min and 3laps to go and I was hurting. Poor Hilde was at the front taking all the leaders laps and trying to follow the other breaks. As we got down to the final 5 minutes and 3 laps, a group of 3 went off the front again and held the gap to the finish. In the field sprint, I managed to make my way to Hilde and we came 2nd and 3rd across the line, and 1st, 2nd in the ladies.

Triple Header Weekend - Weinfelden T Track, Weinfelden Marathon, Almere World on Wheels

Friday Night
Weinfelden T Track

This past weekend was one of the toughest weeks for racing, with a triple header, Friday night the Team Relays, Saturday the WIC Marathon and Sunday the Dutch competition in Almere, Holland. Desly Hill, Bianca Roosenboom, Elma De Vries and I left Thursday lunch time for Weinfelden, Switzerland and arrived around 7pm. We checked into our rooms, and then wasted no time getting to the track to test wheels and have a roll. The Weinfelden track will also be where the World Championships will be in 2009

Friday night we began with the new T Track team relays. It was 5km, so very fast from the start. In the ladies there was two heats with the first 3 teams from each heat making it through to the final and one wild card to whomever the judges decided needed it. In our heat were World Inline Centre, Zepto, Athleticum and Alessie National. We would have made it through to the final comfortably, when in one change, I went to tag Hilde and she slipped and crashed. We went from 2nd to 5th and had no chance after that of catching 3rd. All we could do was hope that we got the Wild Card. World Inline Centre, Zepto and Athleticum made it through from our heat and from the other heat were Rollerblade, Alessie World and Ssang Yong Jesa. As we were the ONLY team to crash, they gave us the wild card, so we were very lucky.

Hilde Goovaerts was the starter from our team, with Bianca Roosenboom going out second and me going out 3rd and finishing. We got off the start in 4th and were going between 4th and 5th for the duration of the race. Our tags were quite shocking as we could never get a clear run from all the traffic and could never tag as hard as we wanted to. On the last corner and the last tag, I managed to pass one other team to come in 5th with the win going to Rollerblade skaters Laura Lardani, Catherine Penan and Tamara Llorens, 2nd Ssang Yong’s Nicole Begg, Tina Struver, and Andrea Gonzalez, 3rd World Inline Centre’s Melissa Bonnet, Nachi Shinozuka and Natalia Artero. It would have been nice to place on the podium, but we are happy with what we could do.

T Track Relay Weinfelden

1st Sportvital Rollerblade World (Lardani, Llorens, Penan)
2nd Ssanyong Jesa Bont (Begg, Struver, Gonzalez)
3rd World Inline Centre (Bonnet,Artero, Shinozuka)
4th Athleticum Rollerblade (Gloor, Khun, Stampfli)
5th Cado Motus World (Thomas, Goovaerts, Roosenboom)
6th Alessi Powerslide (Turcharelli, Gomez, Ponzetti)
7th Zepto (Gegnar, Armee, Van Praet)

Saturday
Weinfelden Marathon

The marathon was on Saturday night at 7pm, just around the corner from the Weinfelden T Track. It was a 21km lap with winding hills and then two very big hills, but when you go up, you must come down, so the downhill was nice. They started the ladies first with the men 2min behind (which was crazy as the men came flying past us not long after, causing a mass pile up on a downhill turn, very hairy). Bianca fell off the group after 8km, she did not enjoy the hills and being a sprinter, this made it difficult to recover quick. Many of the girls suffered going uphill and after the 1st uphill, we were left with 10 in the group. As we made our way into the second loop, the girls that had fallen off the leading group had caught up after having had a nice tow on the back of the mens pack. At the end of the race, 3 skaters were disqualified, but if rules were followed properly, they would have had to disqualify more than half the girls’ peleton for being towed up to the lead group.

There was 6km left in the race when all the teams started fighting to get behind the fast teams. Hilde tried to move up in the group to get a good position and in doing so; we ended up getting fought out and pushed into the grass. We lost a lot of speed and then had to start all over again. Hilde was tired from fighting and could not make the speed anymore, so Jannitta came to the front and led me back to the group. As I arrived at the group, the pace went up after Tochstone’s team memeber and Dutch rival Elma De Vries broke away solo off the front. The peleton panicked and quickly gave chase, as a huge gap of 200mt was opening up. Elma was caught about 200mts from the line with the group moving quite fast. I didn’t have a good position in the group for the field sprint and had no choice but to take off before the group got wound up. As I did that, the Alessi train of 5 skaters hit the front with the rest of the peleton following. I ended up placing 11th in the sprint with the win going to Laura Lardani (Sportvital), 2nd Giovanna Turchiarelli (Alessi Powerslide) 3rd Sandra Gomez (Alessi Powerslide).

Jannitta stayed on with our team manage Diederik Hol and drove to Dijon, France the next day to race in the WIC class 2 marathon, along with Jessica Gaudesaboos, Margo Van de Merwe and Sabrina Gaudesaboos. Hilde drove back to Belgium (as she had to work the next morning for 4hrs) and Desly, Elma, Bianca and I, drove back to Holland to so we could race the Almere World on Wheels competition the next day.

The Mens team raced in Gronigen NL, with a podium win by Michael Byrne.

Sunday
Almere World on Wheels

After leaving Weinfelden at 10pm the night before, we arrived in Holland at 5.30am. We couldn’t really sleep that well in the car, so by the time we got home it was goodnight world. The race wasn’t until 3.30pm so we could sleep till 12pm. The ladies peleton was not so big as some girls had raced the previous day in another World on Wheels competition in Gronigen and others had made the trip to Dijon. Hilde and I were the only ones from CadoMotus today but we were both leading the classement so needed to race in order to keep our points. Poor Hilde had crashed on Friday night, done two relays, raced a hard 42km hilly marathon, drove home late, worked the next day and then came to Holland to race her 3 day in a row. My weekend was pretty much the same minus the crash and work hehe!!

The race was very hard with many girls fresh from having a less tiresome weekend. Team Time Out kept on attacking along with Elma De Vries. Eventually a break away group went with two girls from Time Out, Elma De Vries and myself. Time Out kept on sending one skater off the front so Elma and I had to keep chasing, and every time we caught, the other Time Out would go. In the final lap, it came down to a cat and mouse game with Time Out in 1 and 2 followed by me then Elma. Elma took off first and I quickly jumped out to go as well. Whoever made it to the corner first came off with the most speed. Elma just got in front me and then drove it home on the long 100mt straight. I had nothing left and had to be happy with 2nd. Hilde won the field sprint placing 5th.

1-2 in the rain for CadoMotus, Van Loon wins on return in 't Veld

The rain that held off for the World on Wheels event in Vorden on Saturday did not miss 't Veld this afternoon for the Pinksterdag Skeeler Festijn. The 't Veld course in the North of Holland is known as a tough lap, with a 500-meter section of uneven cobblestones on the back of the course that often is the scene of the winning break.

In wet, slick and rainy conditions, the races in 't Veld were all about wheels - just as the first World Inline Cups of Basel and Rennes had been. It was just minutes into the ladies event, and on the first lap of the mens, that the athletes with grip separated themselves from the athletes without. The availability of MPC wheels today proved a key element in who went with the decisive breaks and who did not.

In the ladies race, CadoMotus World's Angeline Thomas separated herself from the field after a number of attacks involving teammates Jannitta Spigt and Hilde Goovaerts, as well as CadoMotus National's Margo van de Merwe. As in-form skaters struggled to keep in touch - first TimeOut's Anniek Ter Haar, then multiple Nederlands National Champion Elma de Vries, the CadoMotus girls, together with Japanese Nachi Shinozuka, kept the pressure on in the adverse conditions to skate away from the main field... that was soon scattered throughout the course.

Top L: Hilde Goovaerts, Nachi Shinozuka, Jannitta Spigt. R: Margo van de Merwe
Bottom L: Angeline Thomas R: Jannitta Spigt.

Angeline Thomas skated away in a strong solo effort to claim the win with almost a one minute margin over teammate Hilde Goovaerts, who outsprinted Nachi Shinozuka for second place by just 0.295 seconds. CadoMotus World's Jannitta Spigt was herself only narrowly outgunned in the final stretch by Shinozuka, finishing just 0.58 sec behind her in front of a wet and enthusiastic 't Veld crowd.

Angeline Thomas crossing the line for her 2nd Win.

Together with the 1-2 finish in Vorden yesterday, today's result caps off a successful weekend for the CadoMotus World Ladies, taking first and second place in both Vorden and 't Veld.

Hilde Goovaerts 2nd, Angeline Thomas 1st, Nachi Shinozuka 3rd.

In the Mens event it was just over 1 lap before the field began to split as differences in wheel performance on the slick and often rough 't Veld course took their toll. The Powerplay.nl team of Jan van Loon, Alain Gloor and Geert Plender used their MPC wheels to their advantage, playing a lead role in the opening break of the race that included Roy Boeve, Michael Byrne, Josh Lose and Koen Verweij. This group, all on MPC, opened a significant gap on the field, before attacks began from within the group - often initiated by the controlling Powerplay team with 3 athletes in the break.

L: Alain Gloor leads Josh Lose and Roy Boeve. R: Michael Byrne leads Koen Verweij and Geert Plender.

Strong and repeated efforts from Plender, Gloor and Van Loon proved too much as the light, fast-footed skaters wore down their fellow escapees. Van Loon eventually made a solo escape from the breakaway group, and as Boeve tried to verbally 'inspire' the others to keep chasing, it would only serve to keep the remaining two Powerplay skaters well in control and able to attack at will from the back. Work from Lose, Boeve and Verweij kept Van Loon in sight and not too far ahead, from which Gloor used the reduced range to jump across to his teammate and help him to raise the pace and put them out of reach of the others.

Michael Byrne leading Roy Boeve, Josh Lose and Alain Gloor.

Lose and Byrne fell away, in sight but unable to close on the trio of Plender, Boeve and Verweij - and on the final lap it was Van Loon and Gloor who came across the line with a 1-minute 15-second gap over the sprint between Verweij and Boeve for third.

With klassement leader Sjoerd Huisman only managing 21st, Boeve's efforts worked well on the overall classification as he closed the gap on Huisman. Next week the World on Wheels competition takes a break as the Dutch National Marathon Championships will be held in Nijverdaal.

Michael Byrne 3rd in Vorden World on Wheels with Sjoerd Huisman taking the win. CadoMotus Ladies with 1,2,4

With the weather unsure of being wet or dry, it turned out to be a hot, sunny and beautiful afternoon. The course was on a smooth, fast 1300mt track with 4 nice left hand turns, one long slight windy uphill and a slight downhill for the finish. This was not the case last year, where it rained and was very slippery.

The ladies field was again quite strong today with most of the Dutch selection finishing their National Championships last week, most still on a high peak. During the race Bianca Roosenboom’s (NED) job was to collect all the prem sprints, while Hilde Goovaerts (BEL), Jannitta Spigt (NED) and Angeline Thomas (AUS) made sure to counter any attacks that went off after a sprint. Mariska Huisman (NED) tried a few times to break away, but this saw difficult going alone on a fast course.

L: Angeline and Bianca sprint for prems. R: Jannitta Spigt and Angeline Thomas break away with Nachi Shinozuka trailing.

After one of the prem sprints, Angeline Thomas and Jannitta Spigt attacked from the back with Japan’s Nachi Shinozuka quickly jumping on the wheel. They had a 200mt lead on the pack for about 3 laps, with the work being shared between all three skaters. Unfortunately, due to the fast course, they could not hold the gap and got caught with 2 min and 3 laps to go.

In the last 2 laps, there was much fighting, with all the teams trying to get into a good position for the final sprint. Hilde Goovaerts made sure to keep moving up until she was right on the wheel of Time Outs Britta Vantournhout (BEL) and leading her out Anniek Ter Haar (NED). On the last lap and 700mt from the finish, Hilde Goovaerts jumped around Team Time Out to start the lead out with Angeline Thomas on her wheel. With Jannitta Spigt not being able to respond quick enough to follow Angeline, there opened a gap where Britta Vantournhout could quickly jump on.

End sprint, Bianca Roosenboom takes the Victory with Angeline Thomas 2nd and Nachi Shinozuka 3rd.

Coming towards the last corner, Britta Vantournhout was right on CadoMotus so from 5th place, Bianca Roosenboom stepped out and began sprinting but with no one on her wheel. Angeline Thomas then waited for her to pass then jumped to her wheel, leaving a gap on the downhill so no one could catch. With another great result Bianca Roosenboom took the win with Angeline Thomas 2nd and Nachi Shinozuka in 3rd place. A great finish by 17yr old Margo Van der Merwe in 4th and the best finish she has had this season and in a World on Wheels race.

The mens event was fast-paced from the opening, with a full lineup of teams present and all skaters keen to push the pace in dry conditions on the fast Vorden course. Breakaways were the order of the day, despite rarely lasting long as the fast-moving group bore down on each and every one. The Powerplay.nl team of Geert Plender, Sander de Graaf, Stephan Wielinga, Swiss Alain Gloor and returning from injury, Jan van Loon, launched attacks throughout the first 35 minutes of the 45-min +5 lap event - often countering off their own attacks and succeeding in putting single skaters clear of the field a number of times. Habovo were active in initiating attacks also, as were the Nefit team - keen to score a podium place for Arjan Mombarg (NED) who was in front of a home crowd at the event he helps organize and promote each year.

A sneak off the front by Arjan Smit together with Geert Plender and Jan van Loon in the closing laps was close to being successful, however they were swallowed by the bunch in the last lap with around 40 skaters still intact in the lead group to contest the jostling and wrestling match that precedes the final sprint. While Timmerman/PS managed to put 4 skaters together near the front with just 500m remaining, it was Sjoerd Huisman who had been allowed to skate an economical race who took the lead, followed by Ingmar Berga and Michael Byrne (AUS) into the final turn. Despite a corner-exit run up the inside by Byrne, the order at the turn would not change at the line - with Huisman taking the win with another strong sprint finish, followed by Berga in 2nd, and Byrne 3rd for his first podium appearance of the season.

CadoMotus World Ladies and Geert Jan Van der Wal win in Wolvega

Today was one of the toughest and tactical races in Holland in a long time. With the Dutch National Championships finishing the day before, there were many fast but tired skaters. The course was different from last year, being held on a windy 1500mt smooth asphalt road, with one 400mt long straight and 3 left – right turns.

Podium: Angeline Thomas 2nd,Hilde Goovaerts 1st,Elma De Vries 3rd.

There was a lot of international flavor in the group today with Japans National Champion - Nachi Shinozuka, Netherlands Champion - Elma De Vries, Belgium’s Champion - Maaike Polspoel, Jessica Gaudesaboos, Britta Vantournhout and Hilde Goovaerts, and Australia’s Champion - Angeline Thomas. In the men’s, even more Nationalities with Belgiums World Inline Cup skater - Jasper Corne, Alain Gloor – Switzerland, Michael Byrne and Josh Lose – Australia, Ronan Sanchez – Spain and Shinki Yamamoto – Japan. As the Dutch had spent the last 3 days racing their National Track Chapionships, this sparked many break aways by the International skaters and those who did not contest the Championships.

Ladies Peleton on far sie of track.

In the Ladies group, break-away’s went from the gun, with Time Out’s – Britta Vantournhout (BEL) and Maaike Polspoel (BEL) being the first to attack. Jannitta Spigt (NED) soon caught it with Elma De Vries (NED) attacking straight after. After one of the Prem sprints, Elma De Vries and Angeline Thomas (AUS) got away for at least 3 laps until they were eventually caught. The whole race kept up like this until we lost half the group, one of those being Britta Vantournhout. 10 skaters remained in the leading group for the final rounds.

Angeline Thomas off the front for a prem sprint and break-away. Maaike Polspol in the distance.

As we crossed the line with 3 laps to go, the pace dropped dramatically- almost to a crawl, with no one wanting to lead. We came through the last corner on to the straight with 2 laps to go when out of no where; Britta Vantournhout came flying past us, making her way up the road. The whole group was stunned, wondering whether she was on the same lap as us or if she’d been lapped. As we were all in shock, Jannitta Spigt (NED) led for 1 lap, closing the gap right up but not quite enough, so Jessica Gaudesaboos (BEL) had to close the rest.

Hilde Goovaerts leads peleton. Maaike Polspoel and Anniek Ter Haar (Time Out) in view to right.

In the final lap, Anniek Ter Haar (NED) was leading coming out of the last corner with Elma De Vries, Angeline Thomas and Hilde Goovaerts on her wheel. Nachi Shinozuka fought to get in the group, but was quickly reminded of how she had skated weeks before and didn’t quite make it in. With 200mt to go, Elma De Vries jumped left and Angeline Thomas and team mate Hilde Goovaerts jumped right, with Angeline beating Elma to the front of the straight. As Angeline led out Hilde to the finish, Elma was right on Hilde’s wheel. It was a close lunge finish with CadoMotus taking the victory with 1-2, not sure of what order we finished but with Elma De Vries in 3rd.

Finish sprint - Hilde Goovaerts, Elma De Vries and Angeline Thomas.

Happy after the race; Angeline Thomas and Hilde Goovaerts with podium flowers.

In the mens event, extended to 1hour +5laps in Wolvega (over the regular criterium time of 45mins +5laps), a big field started out in the face of approaching rain, with skaters from Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, France and Japan.

The smooth asphalt made for a fast race, with skaters taking a few laps to become familar with the tight left-right turns that acted as slowpoints in the opening laps but were quickly skated through by the group after a short time. Although the tight turns were difficult for some, it was the headwind that made the difference on the back side of the course, where a group of 10 skaters (with only the Habovo team having 2 skaters in the group) broke away and were never caught by the main field - who countered every effort from any team to place a second or third athlete in the breakaway group.

In the final laps, van der Wal's teammate Willem Hut (NED) gave him his cue to go, whereupon he took off from the breakaway with Jasper Corne (BEL) following. Van der Wal, just back from a 4-week absence from the competition with a broken collarbone, was too strong in the closing lap and held off Corne in the long finish to take the win. Corne in turn held off a fast finishing Cedric Michaud (FRA) and Alain Gloor (SUI) who took a close 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Cedric Michaud leads the peleton after the first turn. Michael Byrne in distance.

The bunch sprint was won by Sjoerd Huisman (NED) despite the best efforts of Shinki Yamamoto, Ronan Sanchez and Mark Horsten to take the sprint for team Timmerman/PS. Huisman maintains his lead in the overall classification from Roy Boeve who was 8th in the bunch sprint.
